Purified terephthalic acid (PTA) is an intermediate to polyester production along with monoethylene glycol (MEG). PTA accounts for two thirds of the polyester molecule. It is made via the oxidation of paraxylene, and the final product is in the form of white flakes. It can also be bought as TPA terephthalic acid or as slightly different forms of PTA depending upon the producer e.g. E-PTA produced using Eastman technology. Global capacity is approaching 33 million tpa and growing rapidly especially in China to meet the local polyester market.
