Propylene is the second of the major olefins. It is co-produced together with ethylene in steam crackers. However, propylene has become more than just a co-product. It is growing faster than its big brother Ethylene and various processes for on-purpose propylene production have been developed to provide incremental capacity. Polypropylene is the major outlet for propylene but it is also used to produce Acrylonitrile and plasticiser alcohols. World capacity (from steam crackers) is about 58 million tpa.
