Polyester Fibres are produced from PTA (purified terephthalic acid) and MEG (ethylene glycol.) DMT (dimethylene terephthalate) use has steadily been replaced by terephthalic acid but there is still some limited production based on DMT. Both staple and filament fibres are produced by the melt
spinning process and today polyester is by far the largest synthetic fibre used in the world with production split roughly 60/40 between polyester filament and polyester staple. Filament yarns are used in clothing, furnishings, tyre cord and technical textiles. Staple fibres are used in knitted or woven textiles for clothing and furnishings often blended with cotton or wool, and also in furnishings and non-wovens, including floor coverings.
