The polyester polyethylene terephthalate (PET) has two major uses – polyester fibres in staple, filament and woven forms; and PET Packaging Resin for bottles, containers, sheet and film. World production is over 35 million tpa of which about 63% is for fibres and 37% for packaging. Global growth rates are around 4% and 8% per year respectively.
PET polymer is produced by reacting Monoethylene Glycol (MEG) with terephthalic acid (TPA) (or dimethyl terephthalate (DMT)) and heat treating the resultant monomer. There is a global trade in both PET ‘chips’ for fibre use and the modified grades for packaging applications, as well as extensive recycling of post consumer waste.
