EDC is the primary intermediate feedstock in the production of polyvinyl chloride (PVC). EDC is in turn made from Ethylene and Chlorine Chemicals. The use of EDC in the manufacture of PVC covers about 90% of world production: the remainder uses a route via acetylene and is only used in China. Whilst the majority of EDC is used for PVC manufacture around 1% is used as an intermediate in other processes
