This range of products, produced from phthalic anhydride and the corresponding alcohol, is used in flexible PVC. DBP/DIBP (di-butyl and di-isobutyl phthalates), with world production at around 450,000 tpa, are produced from n- and iso-butanol respectively. DOP (di-octyl phthalate), DINP (di-isononyl phthalate), DIDP (di-isodecyl phthalate) and the range of C7-C13 linear phthalates and other C7-C13 branched phthalates are all produced from the relevant plasticiser alcohol. Their total global production is estimated at around 5 million tpa. In addition, a little below 200,000 tons of phthalate products are produced annually worldwide from non-plasticiser alcohols (such as ethanol/methanol).
