Caustic soda, or sodium hydroxide, is co-produced with Chlorine Chemicals by electrolysis, in the ratio of 1.1 tons of caustic soda for every 1.0 ton of chlorine. Global capacity is currently around 60 million tpa. It has a wide range of consuming industries, where it is often used as a source of alkalinity. The largest single end-user is the pulp & paper industry although it is the alumina industry that attracts most attention due to its importance to global trade.
