The business training seminars are designed to prepare delegates for the global and increasingly transparent chlor-alkali business and are aimed at new recruits into the chlor-alkali and derivatives business as well as at organisations with new businesses to manage.

The seminar offers an understanding of…

  • The chlor-alkali processes, the relative economics, the importance of power and salt costs.
  • The merchant markets for chlorine and caustic soda, and the economics of alternative alkalis such as soda ash.
  • The role of hydrochloric acid in managing chlor-alkali systems: the role of HCl recycling, and the linking of isocyanate and epichlorohydrin units to integrated chlorine sites or parks.
  • The key organic and inorganic chlorine derivatives: markets, trends, and coproduct issues.
  • The key legislative issues surrounding chlor-alkali production, and what the issues mean in terms of trends.
  • The key elements of the vinyl chain: make-or-buy decisions on VCM and EDC, the "EDCU" phenomenon, and how the perception of caustic-vinyl companies can distort chlorine demand planning.

The seminars have an emphasis on providing the tools and methodologies that managers can use to evaluate the dynamics of the industry and to enable a better understanding of trends, competitive behaviour, and especially of competitive advantages and disadvantages.

We review the overall dimensions of the business, and recent history, as a scene-setting for the training. The seminar is not specifically designed to present our vision of the future of the industry, although for instance the extensive sections on HCl and chlorine management have a clear implication on future caustic soda availability.
